May 2012 Length Check + Graduation!

July 2, 2012

Hey everyone,It's taken me forever to post this on the blog even though I did this video about a month and a half ago (end of May) but two amazing things have happened recently: #1 graduated college (woohoo!) and #2 my hair finally "graduated" to BSL length! Here's my video giving you the scoop:First, about graduation: those of you who have been readers of my blog for a while may remember when I spoke about my low point with school in this post. All I can say is God is good and I can't believe college is over! I made it! For some reason I thought my senior year was going to be a walk in the park, but that was definitely not the case! From all the exams to the endless papers (True story: I ended up losing and having to rewrite one-third of a 40-page term paper the day before it was due, two weeks before graduation...talk about a melt down!) my senior year literally felt like I was living under a mountain of work, sleeplessly clawing my through, wondering if I would EVER see daylight! Well, daylight is a here and I officially have my bachelors degree in marketing. I am very excited. :-)

Beyond just the joy of graduating, I also have a job working in the financial sector that I will begin this summer. As I mentioned in a previous post, this entails a move to Texas, so I will no longer be an east-coast transplant...now I'll be a southern transplant! I can't wait to get down on some Texas barbeque and above all, live my life as a real "grown-up." That may seem strange to say because I am already grown (I'll be 24 at the end of this month), but I haven't really felt that way because I've been living the poor college girl life for so long. Bumming rides of friends, calling home to plead with your parents to put $10 in your account, having NO money left over at the end of the month for even one dinner out with friends or a new outfit...I can't say that I'm sad that those days are over. I just bought my first car too (will document that process in a separate post...that was an interesting experience) so maybe its a bit superficial, but I really do feel like things are falling into place and the "grown-up" me is finally emerging. As for the hair and "graduating" to BSL, as I explain in the video, I credit mini-twists with getting me over that last "hump." Since I was extremely busy in school, mini-twists were the perfect hairstyle; I could put them in then leave them in for 4-5 weeks and not worry about it. During my last semester especially, I would do mini-twists back to back to back just to be able to NOT focus on my hair. I think the hands off approach really worked in my favor.

Though the mini-twists were great, I am giving myself a much needed break from them. In fact, now that I'm entering "Corporate America" (especially the more conservative financial sector) I'm interested in experimenting with other types of "sophisticated" natural hair styles. That's not to say that mini twists aren't sophisticated—they're actually very sophisticated and I wore them throughout my internship last year, but I'm a little burned out on them now and I feel the need to find other "put-together" natural styles that will still allow me to meet my length retention goals yet look professional and authoritative at work. The weather is also much hotter and drier in Texas, so I just have a lot of "playing around" to do with my hair...So that's where I'm at in my personal and hair life! Congrats to all my readers who also graduated college as well. How has your summer been treating you so far? What personal goals have you reached thus far? Seriously, I want to hear from you...share in the comment section.
