Why You Should Start Now (Even If You "Don't Know How")

start now

But...I...Don't...Know...How...When combined, I'm convinced these are the five deadliest words in the English language. Why?Because they've probably killed more dreams than any other phrase known to man."But I don't know how."Notice the "but". That means this phrase is generally used as a rebuttal to a suggestion, thought, or idea the phrase bearer could act on but is choosing not to.*Sigh*. Let's talk about this concept of "I don't know how." If we're being real, "I don't know how" is NOT a valid reason to NOT go after your dreams. Honestly, it's just an excuse. The thing that action takers know but women who stall don't realize is that the "how" will only come after you get started. Still not following me? Check out today's podcast where I explain:

Podcast Summary:

I was inspired to do this podcast after thinking about how different my mindset had been this year compared to years past. Back in 2012 and even 2013, there was so much I wanted to do but I never made the attempt to do it because I felt like I "didn't know how".Host an event? Can't do it, don't know how.Write a book? Can't do it, don't know how.Turn my blog into a business?Nope, no use trying. Definitely don't know how. That's literally how I used to think. I would watch others create all these amazing things yet I was still stuck on the sidelines. "If only I knew how," I would think to myself. "Then I would really do it." It wasn't until this year, actually, that I finally realized I had been telling myself one big fat excuse.I came to this realization when, while reading one of my many personal development books, I came across two quotes:

"Success loves speed"

and...

"Successful people take massive action"

I don't know what it was about these phrases that struck me but they seemed to jump off the page. I realized my belief that I couldn't get started until I "knew how" was actually a limiting belief that was holding me back. If I wanted to be successful, I had to get in the habit of taking massive action and taking it quickly.Confession: I Never Know the "How" BeforehandI have a little confession to make. Pretty much everything I've done in the last 6 months - my live events, my book, even the Masterclass I just did with Myleik Teele - I had NO IDEA how to do before I did it. And I mean it, I literally had no idea. When I started writing my book, for example, I had NO IDEA how to even create a workbook, let alone design the layout, LET ALONE get it published on Amazon. I mean NO idea! But I also knew that I really wanted to create that workbook, so starting Thanksgiving break (because I knew I'd have a few days off from work), I sat down, opened my laptop, and got busy figuring out what it took to make my Get What You Want workbook a reality. When I began planning my event in Atlanta, I had NO idea how I was going to pull it off. None. I had butterflies in my stomach every time I thought about. Still, it was something I wanted to do so I committed to it and began reaching out to people who could help. Lo and behold, I linked up with Natasha Cole from The Go and Glow project and the rest is history. Launch Your Life Atlanta turned out to be a success! The key thread I've noticed in the projects that turned out well for me was that I didn't wait until I felt like I "knew how to do" whatever it was I wanted to do. I simply took the first step toward my goal and the "how to do it" unfolded along the way.Let me repeat that last part so you understand what I'm saying: the "how to do it" unfolded along the way. That right there - the fact that your how will come only AFTER you get started - is the one truth I wish more women would learn. For YEARS I held myself back, waiting for a textbook to fall out of the sky with page-by-page instructions when in reality, had I gotten started, I would have learned everything I needed to know. Why "I Don't Know How" Shouldn't Keep You From Getting StartedWhy is this the case? I've realized that what you think is required to reach your dream and what is actually required are most likely two entirely different things. However, you'll never find out what you actually need to do (versus just what you think you need to do) until you get started!Let's say you have dreams of becoming an author. Imagine spending 5 years NOT writing your book because you think you need to find a publisher but you don't know how to find a publisher. Now, imagine that three of your closest friends write and launch their books in 3 months, and you find out that they didn't need publisher at all. How would you feel? If you're like most people, you'd feel pretty salty that you held yourself back because you didn't know how to do something you never really needed to know how to do in the first place. If you just would have started the journey to writing your book, you would have figured out what was actually required as you got further along. This is why not doing something because you "don't know how" is such a tragedy. You end up wasting precious time agonizing over steps you may not even have to take! The Cure for "I Don't Know How"-itisThe cure for "I Don't Know How"-itis is really really simple: start taking action.Massive action. You're life is happening now.If you haven't already, I highly recommend you check out my podcast, How to Break Down Big Goals into “Do-able” Steps. In that podcast, I teach you how to break down a really big goal into manageable tasks you can do everyday. And speaking of doing manageable tasks everyday, I'm (finally) releasing my Custom Today Notepad for pre-order, as many of you have seen my posts about it on instagram and have asked me how you can get one:

2015-01-11 15.56.04-1

If I've convinced you to stop waiting until you "know how" but you're concerned about staying focused and on task everyday, I definitely recommend this little notepad! Honestly, I created it for myself because I needed a way to keep my top goals for the year in front of me but not get overwhelmed with all I had to do. Now, every morning I write my yearly goals and the top 3 things I need to make happen in order to get closer to them. I took so long to release it because I was testing it on myself, but after a month of using it I can honestly say this is a great little tool to help you make progress.I hadn't planned to release this until March but after receiving emails and several tags on Instagram asking about it, I figured I'd stop hogging it and share the wealth. ;-) If you're interested in pre-ordering before it ships the week of Feb 23, just click the image below to be taken to the order page.P.S. - If you're a subscriber to my newsletter, check your email inbox today for a special, subscriber-only discount...
