Need to Build Self-Discipline? Introducing: #NoExcusesJanuary

Have you created your vision board yet? Written out all your goals? Found that perfect planner? Bought that perfect little notebook with the world most inspiring quote written on the cover?

January 4, 2015

2015 is here! So you know what that means…New Years Goals!

Have you created your vision board yet? Written out all your goals? Found that perfect planner? Bought that perfect little notebook with the world most inspiring quote written on the cover? Organized all your sharpie pens by color, thickness, and metallic shimmer?

Okay, maybe you aren’t that OCD when it comes to getting ready for the New Year (well, my accountability partner is but that’s besides the point…) but regardless of what you do, I want to make sure you don’t forget one of the most important factors for your success this year. What’s that you ask? Oh you know…just a little something called…

Self-Discipline.

Yup. Out of all the social media and blog posts I’ve seen online about crushing it in 2015, no one has mentioned self discipline! You can write out the most inspiring, perfectly color-coordinated goals in the world, but if you don’t have self-discipline, you can forget about it this year.

Now I’m not saying this to crush anybody’s dreams. I’m saying this because for 4 years straight (2010-2014) I failed to reach most of my yearly goals because I hadn’t yet built the self-discipline necessary to achieve them. I used to think success was all about goal-setting, but like a car needs gas, without self-discipline it’s difficult to go very far. 2014 was the first year in a long time that I truly felt in control of my ability to make things happen. But that came after a lot of self-reflection, internal work, and most importantly, PRACTICE, in building up my self-discipline.

To help you build up your self-disciplinee, I’ve create a 21-day challenge hereby dubbed #NOExcusesJanuary!

The challenge is design to do just what the name suggests: help you overcome your excuses! Overcoming excuses is important because if there’s one thing I’ve learned about self-discipline (and why some people have a lack of it), it’s that you have to honor the commitments you make to yourself. I talk about this more in-depth in my podcast, The #1 Key to Becoming a Self-Disciplined Person, but your “subconscious self” (also known as that “little voice in the back of your head”) remembers all the times you said you would do something but didn’t follow through. As a result, the next time you set out to do something, you find that you are unmotivated and/or self-sabotaging your ability to do it because there’s a part of you that does not trust that you will do what you say.

If you want to be successful this year, you need to build a new, positive track record of honoring your self-commitments. This habit of repeatedly honoring your word to yourself is what we refer to as “self-discipline.”

With this in mind, I’ve designed No Excuses January as challenge to guide you in successfully sticking to your word for 21 days straight. Last night I hosted a self-discipline Q&A on Google Hangouts where I gave more information about the challenge and how to join. Check it out: (jump to 33:40 if you want to skip straight to the #NoExcusesJanuary Challenge info)

As I mentioned in video, upon joining the challenge you will get the following worksheets to help you keep track of your 21-day self-discipline commitment:

self-discipline-challenge-worksheet-1
self-discipline-challenge-worksheet-2

On the first worksheet, you fill in the task you commit to doing for the next 21 days in the space at the top. As you go through the challenge, you write a big X on each day in the calendar. Your goal is simply to keep the chain of “Xs” unbroken on your sheet — do your commitment everyday, no excuses!

In addition to the calendar worksheet, you get 3 more worksheets, including the second one picture above. On this second worksheet, you have space to write out a plan of action to further ensure that you stick to your commitment. On the bottom half of the sheet, there’s also a space for you to write in the excuses you commonly make when it comes to honoring whatever commitment you’ve chosen for the challenge. As you go through the challenge, you’ll place a tally marks next to any excuse you find yourself tempted to make. This will train you to ignore your excuses in January and beyond!
